How to organise your wardrobe

Most of us have, at some time or other, been unable to find a particular piece of clothing just when we needed it. Or, we’ve had to dig through a messy closet to find a certain top or skirt. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way. With some time and patience, we can organise our wardrobe so that we never have to spend an extra minute searching for anything!

Here are a few simple steps to organise clothing so that every piece is easily accessible and the wardrobe stays tidy and uncluttered.

  1. Empty your wardrobe

Start by removing everything from your wardrobe. You will then have an empty space within which to organise your clothing. Start by  sorting through and decluttering your wardrobe contents and separating them into these categories:

  • Toss
  • Sell or donate
  • Maybe
  • Keep

Toss anything that may be torn beyond repair, stained irrevocably or too worn to use anymore. If you find usable clothes that you no longer like or fit into, consider selling them or donating them to a charity organisation. Then, there are the pieces that you’re not sure you’ll wear but want to hang on to anyway. Perhaps they are of sentimental value to you, or clothes that you think you might wear in the future. Hang on to them for now. The last pile consists of the pieces you wear regularly and undoubtedly want to keep.

Try on your clothes one by one, if that will help you decide what you want to do with each one. While it may seem like a daunting task, it will save you time in decision-making down the line.

Here are a few questions you could ask yourself for each piece of clothing, to know for certain into which of the above categories your clothes will go:

  • Do you love it?
  • Do you regularly wear it?
  • Have you worn it in the last one year?
  • Does it hold special meaning for you?
  • Does it fit you well?
  • Does it make you feel good?
  • Does it pair well with other pieces you own?
  • Do you have an occasion to wear it?
  • Is it in good condition?

The answers to these will give you a better understanding of what should go back into your wardrobe, and what should stay out.

  1. Organise your wardrobe

Take a minute to dust and clean your wardrobe. Once your space is ready, you can further organise your ‘keep’ pile of clothes. Sort them:

  1. By season

If you’re experiencing summer right now, then your winterwear could be stored elsewhere. These are generally bulky and take up too much space, so consider putting them away in suitcases or boxes and pulling them out when the season comes around. If not, store them on the upper shelves of the closet.

  1. By type

Separate your tops, pants, skirts, and dresses. Also make a separate pile for your activewear, if you exercise regularly.

  1. By occasion

Separate your partywear and evening outfits, office wear and homewear. This will especially save you a lot of time when you get dressed for work in the morning or wonder what to wear for a special dinner or event.

  1. By colour

This one’s an option if you feel more strongly towards wardrobe aesthetics.

Once you’ve completed this, you can plan what goes where in your cupboard. Always remember that the clothes you wear the most deserve the most accessible spaces! This means that if you have to get dressed for work 5 days a week, then make sure these pieces are right in front of you when you open your closet. Your activewear should find an easily accessible space too, if you use them every day. You can store lesser worn clothes such as partywear at the back. Use shelf dividers to separate stacks of folded clothes and to keep them from toppling over.

Hang the best and most delicate clothes on wooden hangers. This will ensure that your clothes retain their shape and do not get creased. You could even combine each day’s office wear on the hanger to save you time mixing and matching your pieces. And don’t forget, there’s space under the hanging clothes too! You could stack a few clothes that pair with the ones on the hangers, or you could place bins in which to keep a certain category of clothing, such as delicate hand embroidered tops, swimwear or even sleepwear

Drawers offer the best space for storing underwear and socks. Small and delicate, these require a suitable dedicated space.

The back of the wardrobe door often expands your storage space. You could hang heavy pieces like your coat or bathrobe on a hook – or the same hook could support belts, scarves and ties. They could also support shoe bags for storing your various pairs.

  1. Invest in quality wardrobe equipment

Good quality equipment for your wardrobe will help ensure your clothes last longer. Slim hangars with rounded edges, smooth hooks, clothes baskets and shelf dividers can go a long way in keeping your wardrobe tidy and your clothes in good condition.

And there you have it – a wardrobe that’s neat and organised, saving you time! You could do a complete wardrobe re-organisation every 6 months to keep your clothes edited and use your lesser-worn pieces more often.
